Gary founded City Cruises with his wife Rita in 1989, though the roots of their river business go back to 1976 when Gary bought a fuel barge which provided a filling station for many boat operators and Rita joined him in that business in 1982. Operating a fleet of 20 entertainment and charter vessels, sightseeing boats and high-speed ribs in London plus new expansions in Poole and York, Gary has an evident passion for business and has been the entrepreneurial brains behind the business and its success.

In 2016 Gary was awarded an honorary doctorate of Business Administration from Coventry University in recognition of his significant contribution to the business world and his support of young entrepreneurs in London.

Gary was honoured by the Hall of Fame in 2019.
